LINUXexpert.org Is Now a Mastodon Server

LINUXexpert.org has had a few lives. It started as a WordPress site, and every article from it now lives here on jcoffey.dev. That left a good domain with nothing to do, so I've given it a new job.

LINUXexpert.org is now a Mastodon server, built for people who work with Linux and open source: sysadmins, developers, distro hoppers, homelabbers, and anyone who has ever been paged at 3am and fixed it from a terminal.

It's small on purpose. It isn't trying to be a general-purpose instance. It's meant to be a quiet, well-run corner of the fediverse, where the local timeline is worth reading because the people on it care about the same things.

How to join

Sign-ups are open but reviewed. When you request an account, tell me a little about yourself and what you do with Linux. It doesn't have to be much: a sentence is fine. I read every request and approve people by hand, which keeps out spam and keeps the server what it's meant to be.

Before you apply, please read the server rules. They're short: be decent, label bots and sensitive content, and don't use the place to attack systems you don't own. Security research is welcome.

A few things to know:

• You're not cut off. Mastodon is federated, so you can follow and talk to people on any other server, and they can follow you.
• There's no tracking. No analytics, no ads and no third-party scripts. The privacy policy says exactly what is kept and for how long.
• You can leave. Mastodon lets you export your data or move your account to another server whenever you like.
